Information
Cycling to the east
We meet at 8 am at our meeting point in Old Havana. Countryside and Beach is a circular cycling route that starts and finishes crossing the Bay of Havana on a ferry. We will cycle to the east of Havana, passing by several towns. Regla and Guanabacoa will be the first ones on the way just crossing the bay. Both towns have a deep cultural and economic influence in the Capital. If you are curious to discover those communities and other genuine towns around the Bay, check out our Havana Bay Tour.
We will leave behind the city. On both sides of the road, typical countryside scenery and small towns appear: Santa Fe, Minas, and Campo Florido towns, basically dedicated to agriculture. During the stops at these towns, our tour guide shares information about them. At some point in the route we will alternate asphalt roads and dust roads.
Guanabo beach
Around midday we will arrive to Guanabo. This is a seaside town founded in the beginnings of 19th century. Its beaches are very attractive for tourists and locals. In addition, since the authorization for private work, many residents created hostels for vacationers, and commercial activity multiplied. Thanks to that, today there are multiple places to eat and drink. We will precisely place our camp nearby the restaurant Le Mare, right in front of the beach. There we can relax after the trip, leave the bike, drink cocktails, and have lunch. The guide will take care of the bikes and belongings and you can do nothing else than enjoying your time at this tropical beach. We recommend you to save energies for the return.
More to see on the return trip
At 4 pm, after spending quality time at the beach, is the moment to leave Guanabo town. The return to the city is usually easier and peaceful. We normally have the wind at our back, and it is possible to watch the sunset while traveling. A different path through minor roads will be taken, avoiding so the intense traffic. There will still be more curious coastal towns on the way: Alamar, a labyrinthine neighborhood with soviet- style buildings housing – Cojimar, a fishermen village, inspiration place to the writer Ernest Hemingway for his novel “The old man and the sea”. The excursion ends, first with an astonishing city view at the Fortress El Morro, and second with another ferry travel to cross Havana Bay.
Countryside and Beach is a demanding tour, but still a rewarding combination of exercise and adventure for your cycling holidays.
